Night Market

A Berber vendor sells dried fruits and nuts in an evening market square. Rural market towns across North Africa are important gathering places as men converge there to buy supplies and sell crops or livestock. Worker Keith Jones (name changed) often stops by to strike up conversations with shopkeepers, practicing the Berber language and sharing Gospel truths. (IMB PHOTO)

Indigenous inhabitants

Berbers are the original inhabitants of North Africa, there long before Arab invaders reached these Mediterranean shores. Now Berbers often live in remote mountain villages; rugged roads, or no roads at all, make the task of reaching them with the Gospel difficult. (IMB PHOTO)

Islam dominates

Like the minaret rising behind this Berber boy, Islam overshadows all aspects of life and culture for North African Berbers, whether they live in rural villages or cosmopolitan cities. (IMB PHOTO)

After prayers

Quiet fills a North African mosque after worshippers have finished their Friday prayers. In early centuries after Christ’s resurrection, Christianity thrived along the coasts here. Then Arab invaders conquered both the lands and lives of the continent’s original inhabitants, the Berbers. (IMB PHOTO)

Stylishly covered

Berber women, wearing the traditional head covering, or hijab, shop the clothing alley in a town market. Some women occasionally choose not to wear the hijab, if their husband or father does not insist, but few make that choice. (IMB PHOTO)
