Young Africans need more than the aid promised by world leaders at the recent G8 summit. They need hope — the hope found only in Jesus Christ. PHOTO by Sue Sprenkle

First person: Africa needs true debt relief
I feel the hopelessness this woman expresses as she dies in my arms. I cry for the fate of my friend. She has become another African statistic for the world to lament.” — Missionary writer Sue Sprinkle, reflecting on Africa 's real need in light of the recent G8 summit in Scotland

For years, Sprinkle has lived and witnessed everything the protestors outside the G8 meeting said they were fighting against. She agrees that debt relief is indeed key for Africa — but not monetary debt alone. Read more.

Tsunami Response

Christians continue to help repair lives

Tuslam stares blankly off into the distance. His gaze passes over the miles of rubble that was once his village. Out of habit, he looks for his wife and son, even though he knows he will not find them. They died Dec. 26, when an earthquake sent walls of water crashing through their home.

Southern Baptists continue to aid tsunami victims like Tuslam. Read more about those they're helping.

Speaking of missions

Missions by the Book: For God so loved the whole world

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life” (John 3:16 ).

Quotable: Not just the world of our shopping malls

“That world is not just the world of our shopping malls, manicured lawns and well-appointed offices in the communities where we live, but it includes all peoples of the world.” — Jerry Rankin, IMB president, in To the Ends of the Earth

At one of the medical clinics for tsunami victims staffed by Southern Baptist aid workers, a baby named Tsunami let out a squeal of delight and giggles. All the volunteers looked up to see a healthy child with smiling parents and doting neighbors surrounding them. All were enthralled with this new life that began Dec. 26 at 10 a.m. — just minutes after the giant waves hit. Tsunami's parents scurried to higher ground just in time for his birth.

“Through this healthy baby — born in the midst of the tsunami — there's a glimmer of hope, a glimmer of new life,” missionary Beverly Collins said. “Villages will be rebuilt and lives will be rebuilt.”

She asks Southern Baptists to pray these lives will be rebuilt on the solid foundation of faith in Jesus Christ.
