Speaking of missions

Missions by the Book: Passing the message from father to son and on

“You then, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable men who will also be qualified to teach others” (2 Tim. 2:1, 2, NIV). — Early missionary Paul, speaking to his son in the faith

Quotable: “If we take the Great Commission seriously”

“The recent, tragic tsunami in Southeast Asia was generated by a major shift beneath the surface, and that is what it will take to send equally forceful waves of missionaries across the earth. Where must that shift occur? Deep within the hearts of Southern Baptists who realize this world is in desperate need of Christ — so desperate, in fact, that it is worth the sacrifice of all that we are and have for His cause.” — Tom Elliff, pastor of First Southern Baptist Church in Del City , Okla .

Illustration: Missions can be a family affair

This July 17-year-old Tommy Hutchinson experienced — for the first time — leading someone to Christ. His dad, “Hutch” watched proudly as Tommy prayed with several Quichua who surrounded him to learn more about the drama they'd just seen and gospel tracts they had received. Tommy had just helped present an evangelistic drama to the indigenous Quichua in a village in rural Ecuador . His mom, Amy: 15-year-old brother, Joel: and 12-year-old sister, Danielle, were in Ecuador as part of the first International World Changers family mission trip. During the weeklong trip, the families who participated shared the gospel 8,280 times. More than 280 people prayed to accept Christ as Savior. “Tommy got to be with people who accepted Christ,” the elder Hutchison said. “It's a great feeling knowing God is using your family to grow His kingdom.”
