Volunteers carve path for missions

As the truck dipped once more into a muddy crater the size of an elephant, the team of Maryland/Delaware volunteers realized they were achieving their goal: to take the Gospel to places where the people had never heard.

Look for opportunities to serve as a volunteer.

Speaking of missions

Missions by the Book: God is in the reconciliation business

"For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross" -- Colossians 1:19-20, NIV

Quotable: "God can help you more than we can"

"We think God can help you more than we can. That's really why we've come." --  Missionary Greg Queen, explaining to a Muslim village leader in Senegal that a volunteer team from Maryland and Delaware had not come only to meet physical needs

Illustration: The price of peace

On one Southeast Asian island a Muslim minority group's warring lifestyle has left their villages poor, underdeveloped and desperately needing clean drinking water. Believers approached two neighboring villages to offer help in drilling wells. Both villages welcomed the help, but their military leaders, called village captains, proclaimed that they would not allow the well to be drilled in their village unless it was agreed that the other village would not get a well! Raymond*, the project manager, asked to meet with these men. It took two months of hard negotiations before the men reached an agreement. As they finished negotiations, they turned to Raymond. One captain said, "According to our traditions, in order to seal a peace agreement like this the mediator must be killed. Only his shed blood will make the agreement binding to both parties." Raymond looked at both men in stunned disbelief. He took a deep breath and said, "OK, if that is the only way for peace, then you can kill me. The only thing that I ask is for you to bury my body between the villages as a reminder of this agreement." When the men saw Raymond's sincerity, they were deeply touched. They agreed on an alternate sacrifice and ceremonially exchanged weapons to seal the agreement. To this day, the peace has held between these captains and the communities have reconciled. Believers drilled wells in both villages and continue to build relationships and share the Gospel as they meet physical needs.
