Yemen: They followed
God’s purpose

Quotables
Friends and family in the United States gathered this week for memorial services for three hospital workers killed Dec. 30 in Yemen. All three exemplified the theme for the 2003 International Missions Emphasis—That all peoples may know Him: Follow God’s purpose.

Martha Myers
“Only those who saw her take a sick Arab child in her arms could understand what a servant is. Each day she lived there, ... she died to self.”—Jerry Rankin, International Mission Board president

Bill Koehn
“Bill was not in Yemen because an agency sent him, not because a convention encouraged him to go, not because of the Cooperative Program and not because his family encouraged him to go. He was there because a sovereign God looked across the sea and had compassion on the people of Yemen. God chose someone to stand in the gap. He chose a former grocery worker from Kansas.”—Scott Whitson, pastor of Cross Timbers Baptist Church and a childhood friend to Koehn’s daughters

Kathy Gariety
“She certainly pointed people to Jesus and radiated His love. She did what she talked about and risked her life. She trusted the Lord and put her life in His hands. I’m looking forward to the day when we will see her again.”—Doris Moorman, one of Gariety’s friends in her home church

International Missions Emphasis
That all peoples may know Him

Her first Christmas
The Chinese housekeeper accepted Christ on a Wednesday in December. By that Friday, she had led three other people to the Lord! That weekend she headed home to her village to tell her family and anyone else who would listen about the love of Christ. Unlike some who require a string of witnesses over a long period of time before accepting Christ, the housekeeper had accepted Christ five minutes after first hearing of His love. When she exclaimed, “I believe. I believe. I believe,” the one who was sharing the good news was so surprised that he asked if she had heard the story of salvation previously. “No,” she insisted. She explained that as she had gazed at the baby in a manger scene, she had already sensed that there was something very special about the child. When someone told her the story of Jesus’ saving love, she immediately recognized it as truth and believed.

Praise God that we’re hearing such reports from the Chinese, the focus of the 2002 International Missions Emphasis. Some members of your church may want to make a deeper commitment to that part of the world. For information on China opportunities, e-mail gochina@imb.org.
