Quotable: A child’s heart will lead her

“As a 5-year-old, I stuffed care bags my family took to a migrant camp. As a GA memorizing Scripture, I learned more about missions. In a Philippine refugee camp, curious children watched as I taught English class. Now as a wife and mother, every sermon, lesson and song speaks to me to obey God's call.” — a young woman appointed in February to serve with her husband and four children in Southeast Asia.

Missionaries are being appointed in smaller number until giving to support them increases, but those going still voice a strong sense of God’s call. Read more.

  • • From 251,000 new believers baptized that year to more than half a million this past year

  • "We could not overstate the significance of Avery's leadership as senior vice president of overseas operations," IMB President Jerry Rankin said, recognizing the retirement of missions leader Avery Willis. Read more.

Missions strategist undertakes new task

•  Engage all unreached people groups with more than 100,000 population by 2005 — That’s the International Mission Board’s goal.

•  Engage 3,200 unreached people groups with less than 100,000 population — That’s the task remaining when that goal is met.

He’s confident that the International Mission Board will reach its goal, says IMB missions strategist Curtis Sergeant. But the remaining task could take years for missionaries, and that’s why he’s joining the ministry team of Saddleback Church to mobilize church members, along with other congregations, to tackle the challenge of reaching those last unreached people groups. “Now is the time …”

There were about 40 people crammed into the small room when the 80-year-old Chinese woman arrived.  She walked to the front row, sat down on a small stool that she had brought, pulled out a Bible, a notebook and a pen, and looked eagerly toward the instructor. The curious teacher asked the woman her purpose in attending the church-planting course.  Mrs. Ma* began to tell her story.  She had survived wars, the Cultural Revolution, the internment of her husband in a labor camp and many other hardships.  Now she rejoiced to see God move mightily in her province.  As she concluded the brief summary of her life, she looked straight into the eyes of the teacher and said, “Young man, if you have got a word from God, you teach me.  Because now is the time for China, and I have waited for this my whole life.  I am ready to do whatever it takes to see that my people know the good news.”
