Southern Baptists reach out to Muslim refugees in Sudan

Southern Baptist relief funds are helping hungry and thirsty refugees in the midst of what the United Nations is calling the worst humanitarian crisis in the world. More than 1 million people are homeless and as many as 30,000 dead in western Sudan’s Darfur province. Find out what Southern Baptists are doing.

Opinion: Arguing with success in the fight against AIDS

Success is hard to argue with, but that doesn’t stop some folks from trying. Various critics attending the 15th International AIDS Conference this month in Bangkok, Thailand, renewed their attacks on the Bush administration and “religious fundamentalists” for emphasizing abstinence as the most effective way to prevent sexual transmission of AIDS. Quotable: “Too many zeroes”

“As I typed in numbers on those people groups, there was one key on my computer that I used far too much. It was a key that brought tears to my eyes. It was the zero. ‘Number of Christians – zero.’ ‘Number of churches — zero.’ After pushing that key a few hundred times, it became painful.” —Randy Arnette, newly elected director of International Mission Board work in West Africa, about compiling research on the 1,100 people groups of West Africa

Besides electing Arnette, International Mission Board trustees recently …

  • clarified their policy on non-Southern Baptists participating in IMB volunteer projects,
  • appointed 58 new missionaries,
  • approved a spending plan for $3.2 million received from the record-breaking 2003 Lottie Moon Christmas Offering®.

Sharing the God of love with Muslims

Muslim evangelism made simple

“This is the most peaceful and effective way of witnessing to Muslims I have ever used.”

That’s what one Christian said after attending the Camel Seminar. In the Camel Training Manual, Kevin Greeson shows how to use the Quran as an evangelistic tool and makes it easy to speak to Muslims about Jesus’ holiness, power and position. Grace and forgiveness — God’s gift for the Minangkabau

What do followers of Christ have to offer the Minangkabau people of Indonesia? In a word, grace. Within the Minang way of life, revenge is the norm — not turning the other cheek or the Golden Rule. One believer who was being persecuted by a religious leader told her Minang friend, “I pray for the man who is persecuting me.” With a look of utter shock, the friend demanded to know what the believer was praying — surely for judgment and a curse on his household! When the believer said she prayed for the man to be forgiven and for her own heart not to be hard toward him, the Minang woman shook her head in disbelief. After a moment of reflection she said, “You are a good person to pray such, but I could not pray the same!” How true! Only with the love of Jesus can we love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us! Ask that believers living in Minang land will be a shining example of Christ’s love to those around them. Pray that the Minang will desire such grace in their own lives.
