In many cities in China such as Hohhot, hutongs — traditional neighborhoods with narrow cobbled streets and old-styled architecture — are being torn down to make way for modern high-rise apartments.

Hohhot: Winds of change

The flags flutter and crackle in the dry breeze, supposedly carrying prayers with each movement. The wind moans through the rafters of the ancient Buddhist temple just outside the city of Hohhot. “We used to have so many more idols here,” says the lama of the temple, “but the winds came and blew them away.” While this wind was the Communist Party in the 1960s, a growing number of Christians pray for new winds — winds of God’s presence — to come to Hohhot, a city of 2.4 million in China’s Inner Mongolia region. That all peoples may know Him

Coming soon!
New planning guides for offering promotion

Ideas and helps for promoting the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering®, a CD-ROM with PowerPoints, videos and photo galleries — all go into the mail to your church this month. This year your church will receive two planning guides, each including the CD.

  • New this year! A special guide for pastors includes suggestions for planning up to five weeks of worship services focusing on international missions.

  • A guide for missions leaders includes planning suggestions, stories from South Asia and a catalog of resources you can use in your church.

Your church should receive the guides by Oct. 1, but in the meantime, visit the Web to preview this year’s materials.

Beyond the Wall

Sharing the God of love with Muslims

Host a women’s prayer tea

Invite other women into your home. Enjoy tea together. Share what God is doing in your own lives. Then venture to the edge of lostness as you pray for Muslim women, who have less access to the gospel than anyone else in the world. The leader’s guide will tell you how to plan a prayer tea.

Participant’s brochures will help those who come know how to pray. Brochures will be available the end of September. Order now.

‘Jihadists’ target freedom, not just Christians, worker says

Extremists who bombed five churches in Iraq Aug. 1 targeted the congregations as symbols of a free Iraq and not specifically because they are Christian, a Southern Baptist worker with a heart for the Iraqi people said. Read more and see how to pray for the situation.

South Asia

South Asians need our friendship

During her last stay in the United States, a Southern Baptist worker in Asia, met many South Asians — including a hotel manager in Tennessee, a gas station attendant in Georgia, a salesman in Colorado, a convenience store clerk in Florida, a waiter in Virginia and a cook in Missouri. Sadly, she learned that few of them have had any Americans embrace them in friendship or share a gospel witness with them. “Muhammad, a Bengali Muslim from Bangladesh, is one example,” she says. “Muhammad’s uncle, a high-ranking, influential governmental official in Bangladesh, sent his nephew to the United States to live and work. Muhammad speaks English well and has a good job through which he interacts with many Christian customers. Yet during his 10 years in the states, few Christians have taken the time to befriend Muhammad. When I talked with Muhammad, he expressed that he suffers a great deal of stress-related illness that is brought on by pure loneliness.”

What can you do for South Asians like Muhammad?

  • Pray for the salvation of South Asians living in the United States and Canada.

  • Ask God to provide you with opportunities to befriend South Asians.

  • Invite South Asians to celebrate holidays with you and your family.

  • Tell South Asians how deeply Jesus loves them.
