People Group Focus: People of Greece

Olympic gold will shine on Athens in 2004 as the nations of the world gather in the country that was once the center of the world.  During the reign of Alexander the Great, Greece was the center of the known world, providing the world with Hellenistic logic, Plato, Aristotle, marathons, and the gymnasium.

Olympic visitors to Greece will find the Greeks to be well aware of a strong historical and cultural heritage. Traditions and customs differ throughout Greece, but overall a strong sense of unity prevails. The Greek Orthodox Church has a strong traditional influence on the Greek way of life, especially in more rural areas, and Christianity is part of the national heritage.

Although the Greek language was used to translate the Old Testament Scriptures and then to record the apostles' original writings, Greece needs the gospel today as much as the unreached peoples of the world.  Though home to the ancient Greek Orthodox Church in Constantinople (Istanbul), Greece has few who understand the gospel of faith alone by grace alone and few Greeks have a living relationship with Christ.  There are about twenty thousand evangelical Christians in the country- just two tenths of one percent of the ten million citizens.

Prayer Points for the People of Greece

  • Pray for the Thessoloniki and Athens Teams as they prepare for more than 300 volunteers for Olympic ministry in summer 2004.
  • Pray for laborers to go to Greece for the summer 2004 ministries.
  • Ask God to draw the Greek people to Himself.
  • The hearts of the Greek people are generally not open to the Gospel.  Pray for the seed of the Gospel to fall on good ground and grow.

Persecuted Church: Maldives

Only a few Christians live among the 300,000 people of the Maldives, an island nation off the southwest coast of India. The law requires every Maldivan to be Muslim and Christians are regularly harassed by the government and, at times, thrown into prison and publicly flogged. If one student . . .

If one student gave up one soda a day

and saved that money from now until Christmas

she would have saved $65

to give to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering to save a lost world.

If 10 friends committed to do this, they would save $650 for LMCO.

Missions Heroes Bio Byte: William Borden

No Reserves, No Retreats, No Regrets

As heir to the Borden Dairy estate, William Borden could have anything he wanted.  As a graduation present, his parents gave him a trip around the world and during his travels he wrote home to say, "I'm going to give my life to prepare for the mission field." After making this decision, William Borden wrote two words in the back of his Bible: "No Reserves."

Bible Study: Coming Home

Exodus 32

By Bruce W. Venable

Coming home from a mission experience may be harder than leaving on that mission.  You expected life "there" to be different, but at home life was supposed to be, well, like home. Drawing on many years of working with student missionaries, Bruce gives students who are coming home from mission experiences great advice by drawing a parallel bewteen coming home and Moses' trip down the mountain after meeting God.
