People Group Focus: The Kyrgyz of Kyrgyzstankrygyz flag

It is the most remote, newest, poorest and most volatile of the country's states. Dominated by a large mountain range and encircled on three sides by two other countries, this southern-most oblast (province) is far removed from the Kyrgyzstan's capital city and other large population centers. The 400,000 citizens are drawn almost equally from three Turkic people groups, the Kyrgyz, the Uzbek, and the Tajik.   These three distinct, ancient cultures sometimes blend harmoniously and sometimes clash unpleasantly.    It is a troubled land of spectacular natural beauty, faded industrial might, interethnic tensions and warm-hearted people. Prayer Points for the Kyrgyz of Batkin oblast

krygyz men eating

  • Pray for the recording that has begun of 35 stories and 15 songs from the Word in the Chronological Storying Project. Lift up the storytellers that they will let God speak through them and that the project will be finished in His timing.
  • Pray that a local believer would be able to begin traveling to this month’s focus area to share and that a medical group would be raised up to partner with him this coming year to open doors.
  • Pray that people’s response to joblessness would be to seek God rather than illegal means to earning a living.
  • Lift up the villages that they have access to clean drinking water and to the Living Water.
  • Pray that this country would soon celebrate Christmas in the true sense and that the numbers that worship on Christmas would grow more than those that party for New Year’s.

DID YOU KNOW?globe

10 years ago, there were only a handful of believers in Kazakhstan. In 2003, there are more than 10,000.

Challenge from the Field

Merry Christmas! I want to thank those of you who have given to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering during this Christmas season. Without that support, my wife and I would not be on the field along with thousands of other personnel in unreached areas. Without LMCO, there would be no volunteer mission projects reaching millions of people who were not as privileged as you and I to be born in a land with access to the Gospel.

For those of you who have not given, or gave so little that you’re feeling a little guilty, then let me give you a little bit of motivation.

For the first time since the Great Depression (the 1930s), about 600 otherwise qualified people had to be turned away from being IMB missionaries because funds to send them have not increased at the same rate as the numbers of people wanting to serve have increased (or at the same rate as normal inflation for that matter). But in our region alone, there are still 87 people groups of over 100,000 in population who are untouched by the Gospel, so we need these new missionaries- and that is only in our small region of the world!

Motivated yet? This year, the LMCO goal is $133 million. Every penny goes directly overseas and for ministry throughout the world. And guess what? You don’t have to be Southern Baptist in order to give. You can go online at www.imb.org/giving to make a contribution or to simply learn more about the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering. Thanks again for your support in this way from someone on the field who appreciates you!

College Search

As you consider the institution of higher education that will make or break your future, consider attending a college that will give you good training for a missionary career:

Southwest Baptist University's Intercultural Studies major

North Greenville College's Intercultural Studies major

Tips for preparing for a career in missions:

1. Befriend the nations on your campus and in your community. The nations are around you - reach them where you are.

2. Be cautious about getting into debt. Too much debt will make you ineligible to be a missionary. Use credit cards sparingly and do your best to go through college with a minimum of student loans, if any.

3. Give to international missions through the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering. This offering supports missionaries on the field and will support you as a missionary in the future. If you want others to give to you, make it a habit to give to them.

Persecuted Church: North Africaafrica map

From a Christian worker

I have seen in my North Africa brothers here a kind of faith of which I am not familiar.
For three days now at hours-long meetings several times a day, the brothers have been taken before a huge group at the Imam's (Muslim leader's) place. They have been threatened and ridiculed. Still they have stood firm.

Several have spoken up on behalf of their faith before over a hundred hostile people. One cried afterward for joy, saying that he had never spoken out before a crowd about anything. Today, he spoke before dozens with boldness and afterward acknowledged that it was only because of the Holy Spirit that he could have done that. Another brother has said that as difficult as the trial has been, he hopes it could go on for 30 more days because of the opportunity it has given to proclaim the message before dozens of influential religious leaders.

In all my life I have not experienced a more faith building and intense trial as this has been. It is still not over. But there is an incredible opportunity here to see the truth illuminate a very dark place. Please continue to pray for our Father's glory.

2 Thess. 1:4 Therefore, we ourselves speak proudly of you among the churches of
God for your perseverance and faith in the midst of all your persecutions
and afflictions which you endure.

Bible Study: Advocating His Mission

By Shane Tucker

For the last few months we've been discussing what it takes to be an on mission Christian by looking at the four A's. We've learned that its deeper than just going on a mission trip or praying for an unreached people group. On the other hand, these activities can and should be a natural outcome of becoming more of an on mission Christian. But being an on mission Christian means having some personal, spiritual characteristics. Those are what we have been looking into lately and this month we'll look at the final "A". Read more . . .

Let us not forget that to God each of us is a special case. The is no category labeled "miscellaneous." The God who guided the great apostle in his great work is the God who carries lambs in his arms.
