People Group Focus: Lampungese of Sumatra, Indonesia

Lampungese man Almost all of the 2 million Lampungese of Sumatra are Muslim-not because they have rejected the gospel, but because they have never heard it. Most Lampungese live in villages where there are no churches and no Christians. As followers of folk Islam, the Lampungese live in fear of evil spirits and of alienation from the tight-knit Islamic community.

Recently, a teacher from a well-respected family noticed many verses in the Quran that spoke of Isa Al-Masih (Jesus the Messiah) as the "Straight Path" and the "Word of God." Praise God that He used these verses to lead the teacher and

his wife on a spiritual journey to faith in Jesus Christ.

The Lampungese live in one of the most lush, beautiful spots of the world, where surfers seek outindonesian flag the perfect wave from black sand beaches emerging from the tropical rain forest. The scenery is rich, but this once-wealthy people group is now enmeshed in poverty. Their poverty is not only financial, but spiritual as well.

Prayer Points for the Lampungesespices

From a Christian Worker

Literature Drop: Two literature drops have been recently been completed, with evangelistic videos and Gospel portions being placed near 200 villages. Pray that the literature will be found and shared among the villagers. Pray that those who read it will want to know more and will use the contact information printed in the literature.

Radio Program: The first ever evangelistic radio programs will begin airing for 30 minutes each day in March 2004, God willing and the funding comes through. It our first step toward putting the Gospel on the air in the heart language of the people. Pray that many will hear and respond, and that effective follow-up will happen.

Hospital Outreach: We have hundreds of contacts through hospital outreach. Pray for people to respond to the letters we send asking them if they want to learn more about Christ. Also, pray for the national workers who do outreach through the hospital. Pray that they will not be afraid to share the Gospel and that they would have a great desire to see the people evangelized.

Church Planters: "Phil" is a faithful national church planter who has led 20 Lampungese to Christ. Pray that he'll continue to be bold and faithful to his calling. Pray for wisdom as he secretly disciples these new believers. They must meet in secret at this time due to severe persecution of those who leave Islam to embrace Christ. Pray that others will join in the harvest.

Persecuted Church: Myanmar - Persecution Backfires

A pastor in Myanmar was accosted by police, mercilessly beaten in front of his wife and 2-year-old daughter, then left bound overnight in front of the village chief's house. The next morning, he was taken to jail, where he boldly spoke to guards and inmates about Jesus. He was released after his congregation prayed for him and appealed to authorities, and he continued to proclaim Christ in the community. Twenty-three people came to Christ, and the church had to add meetings during the week to accommodate seekers.

Reaching the Unreached Peoples of the Earth

Mission work has always been focused on bringing people to salvation through Jesus Christ, but in the last 20 years, missions agencies that sent missionaries to the field "were content to work only where missionaries were welcomed, while

more than a third of the world remained isolated from access to the gospel,"

says International Mission Board President Jerry Rankin.

Bible Study: Being an On-Mission Chrisian - The Day-to-Day Grind

By Shane Tucker

During the last four months of 2003, we investigated the concept of what it takes to be an on-mission Christian. But what does this really mean on a Tuesday or on a Friday night? What does it look like on a real-life, day-to-day basis? Do you wonder how you could become one who is counted among the “sheep,” loving the least of these and following their shepherd’s mission?
