People Group Focus: Romany (Gypsies)

People once feared the Gypsy Ivan Zahariev. He was a criminal and sometimes vicious when he was drunk. But when Ivan Zahariev accepted Christ as his Savior, his life changed.

After Ivan's conversion, IMB missionary Bill Wardlaw discipled him.  Ivan, the warehouse worker and drunk, became Ivan, a polished preacher well-versed in the Bible, a leader.  Ultimately, his entire village changed, too. Read more of Ivan's story.

Worldview

"Gypsies" are known around the world by this common name, although they come from varied ethnic backgrounds. They also have prejudice and discrimination in common - treatment they receive in virtually every country, making them the most deprived ethnic group in Europe (ERRC*). They are a "scapegoat minority" and, therefore, live with high unemployment, illiteracy, and high death rates.

Ironically, it is the Romany (Gitano) population in Spain that has become the key to an evangelical revival in the very country that spawned the Reformation yet has become "truly Post-Christian" (Operation World).

While the Romany have typically attached themselves to the dominant religion of the place they live more from convenience than conviction (Word Dictionary), one of the fastest growing expressions of Protestantism in Spain arises from the Gypsy church, says Patrick Johnstone, author of Operation World .

"God takes up an instrument from the despised of the world - He chooses that to confound the wise," said Jose Serrano, a founder of several Gypsy churches around Seville, Spain. Read more . . .

Persecuted Church: South Asia

"These are marks of grace," A. explained, referring to his blind eye and the scar on his forehead. "I could have died in the attack on the church."

After his wounds had healed, A. explained to his small South Asian congregation, "God is using these things - the attacks, the bombs, the machine gun first - to purify and renew us, His Church.  He is calling us to reach out to the Muslims around us.  Will we listen, or does God have to do something more?"

As we have recently remembered the World Trade Center and Pentagon tragedies of Sept. 11, recommit yourselves to faithful intercession for Muslims.  Pray particularly for young Muslim men living in impoverished, hopeless situations to hear of God's love for them.  Pray that they will reject the temptation to become terrorists, choosing instead the abundant life found only in a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.  Also, pray for Muslim fundamentalists to have life-transforming encounters with Jesus Christ like that experienced by Saul, the terrorist targeting Christians, on the road to Damascus.

Bible Study: Becoming an On-Mission Christian:   Spiritual Awakening

By Shane Tucker

Spiritual awakenings are part of the heritage of students.  Because students cried out to God for Him to move during their generation and then they followed God where He led, great spiritual awakenings have shaken the foundations and changed the history of American Christianity.  If students aren't awakened to God's Spirit and work, however, they can't cry out to God to awaken our nation and our world.  Find out from Shane how to seek spiritual awakening in order to rock the nations with the love of Jesus.
