People Group Focus:  Sorani Kurds of Iraq

The Sorani Kurds of Iraq have a reputation as a fierce tribal people that has intimidated travelers for centuries, dating back to the time of Marco Polo. This seemingly invincible people were, however, extremely vulnerable to threats by Sadaam Hussein's former regime, and still have little access to the gospel.

The Sorani Kurds are difficult to access in their homeland, and are dispersed throughout Europe as lonely refugees. As well, a significant portion of their population is illiterate. While sharing the good news with them is difficult, the New Testament is now available in Sorani, a few radio stations broadcast the gospel in the Sorani language and the Jesus Film has been translated in to Sorani. There are reports of 200-plus believers among the estimated three million Sorani in Iraq today, although official statistics still rate them as 100 percent Muslim.

More about the Sorani.

Prayer Points for the Sorani Kurds

  • Pray that "Paul" would receive a visa in order for him to stay in his country of residence one more year. If he is refused, he must return immediately to Iraq.
  • Pray that the Lord would bless his work with organizing churches internationally to be praying on behalf of the Kurds.
  • Pray also that God would be raising up more "Pauls" within Kurdistan.
  • Pray for the establishment of God's powerful Word in the lives of Sorani Kurds.
  • Pray that the establishment of God's Word would convict each of them of their need for a savior.

Would you pray for Muslims?

Prior to the war in Iraq, more than half of all Iraqis depended on humanitarian aid for food. Now shops had food and goods, but few Iraqis had money to buy anything. One of the most destitute groups is the Marsh Arabs, a minority group of Shiite Muslims. Prayer requests for a variety of needs among Muslims are updated weekly online.

Persecuted Church

"Adam"* is a young Christian in rural India. In his Hindu village, people were antagonistic to the gospel. One day Adam's older brother and wife became the first believers in the village. Although Adam was not willing to follow, he observed the changed lives of his brother and sister-in-law. They began to share the gospel with other villagers, but no one would listen to them. Then the beatings began. Every time the Hindus beat Adam's brother, someone in the crowd became a believer. Eventually, Adam himself believed in Christ and began suffering the same persecution as his brother. One day the villagers surrounded Adam, his brother and the small group of new Christians. In rage they had prepared a huge pot of boiling water and were preparing to cook the Christians alive. Then one of the Hindus calmed the mob and said, "If we do this even more will become Christians," so they agreed to just beat the believers. As a result, others were added to the family of Christ. They now have a church of more than 35 families in that village.

*Not his real name.

Two factors common to most church-planting movements are 1) a passion and fearlessness and 2) a price to pay to become a Christian. Read about all 10 common factors.
