Welcome!

More than 20,000 students literally changed the world for Christ with their commitment to "the evangelization of this world in this generation." These students started the Student Volunteer Movement in 1888 and became foreign missionaries between 1891 and 1936 (about 445 students each year).

Many student leaders in 2003 have called for a return to the vision of the Student Volunteer Movement,"the evangelization of this world in this generation." It seems, though, that the Student Volunteer Movement II is HERE and NOW. Student responses to God's work among the nations seem to far exceed the great response of 1888. More than 6000 college and high school students are serving each year through the IMB (not to mention the thousands who serve with other organizations). God is working in amazing ways through students who are proclaiming His glory to the nations! May we continue to be faithful to Him in the days of tremendous opportunity.

The Lebanese of Beirut

God at work: A story from the field

"As I write this e-mail, my heart is rejoicing for God is moving in Beirut!   God has called our team to lead the effort of placing a Bible in every home in Beirut (415,000 homes) and planting a church in every neighborhood (61 churches) by the end of 2004.  I literally weep as I write about the lives that have and are being changed in our city.  I am not sure if I was really prepared to see the power of God manifested like it is.   He is awesome! Beirut will never be the same. Click here to read what God is doing.

Worldview

Lebanon is a highly literate and educated society, with 92% of its almonst 4-million person population considered literate.  Freedom of religion exists in Lebanon where 41 mosques, 25 non-evangelical and 14 evangelical churches exist in municipal Beirut alone.  Islam is the dominant religion and 60% of the Lebanese are Muslim with this number increasing each year.  There are eighteen different government-recognized sects of Islam, much like the denominations of Christianity.  There are many other sects that are not recognized by the government.  Less than 1% of the population are born-again Christians.

Prayer Points

  • Pray that all who claim the Name of Christ in Lebanon will have boldness and courage.
  • Pray that all who are working in Lebanon will have unity in Spirit.
  • Pray that the Gospel will spread in Beirut.
  • Pray that Christian workers will be privileged to see people come to Christ every week.
  • Ask God to send volunteer workers to help them distribute His word and plant churches.
  • Pray that by the end of 2004: every person will have the opportunity to respond to the Gospel; every home will receive a copy of God's Word and every neighborhood will have a church.

Persecuted Church

Arun Pawar, a reporter for the Raigad Times in India's Maharashtra state, has been writing anti-Christian "investigative" articles for the newspaper and causing significant repression of Christians. His claims that families have been given houses and money to convert to Christianity have stirred up Hindu militants. Christian workers have been prevented from entering tribal hamlets, forcing childcare centers and youth empowerment activities to close.

Intercede for the Christians of Maharashtra state (located in the north center of Peninsular India.)  Ask God to give them grace to endure persecution in a way that causes his name to be praised. Ask God to frustrate this reporter's efforts to hinder Kingdom advance. Pray for his salvation and that of the Hindu militants who are frustrating Christian outreach.

Air Travel

(Or: Why Birds Never Look Truly Relaxed)

You're probably not going to believe this, but there are still some people who are afraid of air travel. Ha ha! Are they a bunch of Nervous Nellies, or what? Oh, sure, air travel seems dangerous to the ignorant layperson, inasmuch as it involves hurtling through the air seven miles straight up trapped inside an object the size of a suburban ranch home in total defiance of all known laws of physics. But statistics show that, when you're in an airplane, you're actually four times as safe as when you're driving your car on an interstate highway. 1

1 Provided that you are driving blindfolded.

Overheard on the Field

"Crying for Courage"

by a worker in the Middle East

"Today in one voice, the evangelical community is crying out to God for boldness and courage. Please join us in this prayer. Now is not the time to pray for safety and protection - it is the time to allow His Word to spread. We often have thoughts of retreat, but these are the days that the people in the community are looking on to see how we will respond. Will we be cowards or courageous? Much more important than this, many have questions and we need to be there to share His truth during these days."

"Be strong and courageous.   Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go."   Joshua 1:9

When the Good News is a Tough Choice*

By George Siler

Sometimes, choosing the Good News is not an easy choice. Christians are beaten and disowned - and sometimes killed - because they believed that the Good News of Jesus Christ was truly good for them in this life and for eternity.

How can we give people a gospel message that could kill them? Perhaps the real question is, how can we not give them the Truth when Jesus Himself knew the price some of His followers would pay and still He called them to Himself - to peace, to abundance, and to eternity with Him?
