The Ramses Gateway in Joppa was located in front of a fortified citadel dating from the reign of Ramses II (late Bronze Age), during which time many parts of the country were under Egyptian rule. Joppa was a stronghold of Egyptian authorities, and according to an inscription, slaves were gathered here and transferred to Egypt.
