Plenary Indulgence

The Roman Catholic church celebrates Good Friday in Rome, Italy by hosting the Via Crucis or Way of the Cross at the Colosseum. This is a somber event that follows Christ’s journey through the Stations the Cross. Attenders listen by candlelight as the liturgy is read while a procession carries a cross to each station. For the Roman Catholic Church, the exercise of the Via Crucis is tied to the plenary indulgence, according to the conditions established by the Church.
To obtain indulgence, the faithful must pray at each Station, and meditate on the mystery of the Passion. The same indulgence can be applied to those who do not physically visit the Stations, as long as he or she meditates on the Passion for 30 minutes.
