The Syrian Refugee Community Center is responding to earthquake rescue and relief efforts, reaching out with the tangible love of Christ.

On February 6, Southeastern Turkey and Northern Syria were hit with multiple earthquakes over 7.5 magnitude in the early morning hours. The quake and aftershocks have caused utter devastation in the region, with the current death toll exceeding 11,000. Many are stranded in harsh winter conditions, having to sleep outside overnight as they wait for secure shelter.

Storms are due to increase throughout the week across the entire region. Many Syrians are already displaced in their own country or across the border and have limited access to resources. Many Syrians have relocated over the years and now live near the community center. In this close-knit community, some still have loved ones that are missing or have lost contact during the disaster.

Through the center, we are offering prayer support for the local community as well as providing support to our partners working with rescue efforts, food/supply distributions, and loving those who are grieving. Since COVID, our center has gone through numerous changes. One is that instead of offering programs only at our building, we started going into neighborhoods to do programs for those who could not travel to the center. At the beginning of this year, we prayed for the Father to lead us to a new neighborhood where we could engage our people. He is so good at providing! He led us to a neighborhood, and we began to plan how to engage our people group there over the next year.

We spent 40 days as a team praying and fasting before entering the neighborhood this past summer. We started by offering language classes and an emotional health and exercise class. Since it was our first time in this neighborhood, we thought we would meet a handful of families, but the Father blessed us with 45 new ladies and their families!

At the same time, we started to offer a new beginners language class at our main center. We thought a few ladies would come in addition to those already attending. Instead, about 20 new ladies showed up at our main center! The Father gave us double what we asked in both locations – 60 new connections! As we visit these new families in their homes, we have had many opportunities to share the good news, and some people are open to what they are hearing.
