Boy in Mumbai

Families that live alongside the streets of Mumbai. Some of these families have lived on the sidewalk for years but most live in one area for a few months and are then asked to move somewhere else. They only have a few blankets, some cardboard boxes, and a couple pots to cook over a fire. Some families, like the one shown in these images, own a cow that people come and feed and give the owner some food in hopes of luck or prosperity. In Hinduism, the cow is revered as the source of food and symbol of life and may never be killed. Like all societies the Hindus, have hoarded what we have considered to be “wealth”. Due to its multi-purpose usefulness, cows became a “good luck charm”. If a cow passed you, it is considered to be good luck.
