Egyptian Sculpture

The sculpture of the lion-headed Egyptian goddess Sekhmet was recently reconstructed in the Red Basilica (Red Hall) of Bergama. The basilica was built at the time of Emperor Hadrian in the 2nd century A.D. and is believed to have been dedicated to the Egyptian gods Serapis and Isis. The temple was converted by the Byzantines into a Christian church dedicated to St John but was subsequently destroyed.
