Smiling Faces

The Bayon is probably the most famous temple within the fortified ancient city of Angkor Thom in Cambodia. Built during the reign of King Jayavarman VII in AD 1181-1219, its 54 towers are decorated with 216 smiling faces of the Hindu god Avalokiteshvara.
