Turkish Farmers

Located in south central Turkey, Lystra is mentioned six times in the New Testament and was visited several times by Paul and Barnabas. It was previously known as Iconium and still referred to as that by many Turks today. The ancient city of Lystra is now buried under an un-excavated mound of earth. The ancient city has never been excavated because of lack of funds or lack of interest. Paul preached in Lystra (Acts 14:2-7) and also healed a lame man (Acts 14:8). He was later stoned by the Jews and left for dead (Acts 14:19). On recovering, Paul left for nearby Derbe. He later returned again through Lystra to encourage the believers that had been made on the previous visits. These images show what Lystra looks like today with famers working the fields planting crops.
