Street scenes from Shanghai, China. The history of Shanghai dates back 6,000 years to a time when its people lived by hunting, fishing and farming. By the 10th century, the area currently known as Shanghai had been formed. It began as a fishing village, but over the centuries it grew in importance in economic development due, in part, to its excellent port and shipping conditions, but also due to the cotton and textile industries.
