Jan and Ernie Harvey, missionaries to Portugal, talk about the difficulties they have overcome since an October 1977 morning when Ernie began suffering convulsions and lapsed into a coma. He was flown back to the US for treatment of a severe attack of herpes simplex encephalitis (inflammation of the brain). He experienced memory blocks, trouble in reasoning, and verbal confusion. He also had to relearn some activities, such as dressing himself. By 1979 he had recovered enough to return to the field. “I’m not well, but I can preach,” he said in 1981.
