Sitting on the sidewalk in Cusco, Peru, an older man carves gourds and displays his finished wares in a sack at his feet. Called “mate,” the gourds are dried and then are carved with traditional scenes and motifs from the various regions of the country. Once dried, the gourds are virtually indestructible.
