An ambrotype from IMB archives of missionaries Thomas Alfred and Mary Reid. The couple married in 1857 and sailed for Nigeria two and a half months later. Before their first wedding anniversary, Mary died in Ogbomosho from the “African fever” that took the lives of so many missionaries in the early years. Reid remained in Africa as a widower, suffering hardships and isolation through the Civil War years, until 1866 when he returned to the US.
