Conakry, Guinea

(KON-ah-kree) – Workers in Conakry regularly meet with university students to help them with their conversational English, broaching topics like favorite foods and favorite holidays. When students are asked what their favorite holiday is, many will smile and say, “Tabaski.” It is a day they look forward to, a day they wear new clothes, and a day they eat well. In early June, Muslims across Guinea will gather as families and celebrate this religious holiday (also called Eid al-Adha), remembering Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his son, whom they believe to be Ishmael. They will begin the day with prayers, followed by slaughtering a sheep and then gathering to eat and spend time with family and friends. Some of these same students have been studying the story of Abraham and Isaac, how God provided the sacrifice in place of Isaac, and how Christ became this perfect sacrifice for us. Pray that these students will understand what Christ’s sacrifice means for them and that they will boldly choose to follow Christ as their Lord and Savior.
