Digo of Kenya and Tanzania

(DEE-goh) – To some, it’s just a walk in the forest. To others, it’s a walk into another spiritual realm. Along the east coast of Africa, children are learning about the traditional spiritual beliefs of the Digo tribe before the influence of Islam and Christianity arrived on the continent. They are learning about wearing black to appease the spirits of their ancestors who live in the trees. They are learning that black goats and black chickens are the best ones to sacrifice. And they are learning that hugging a special tree and whispering your dreams to it is asking your ancestors for their help. They also are learning that people still come to this forest to hold worship services. Please pray that these children and others who hold these beliefs will come to know the Creator of the trees, the Creator of their souls, and that only through the sacrifice of Jesus are they set free from sin to a right relationship with the only true God. “But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8 ESV).
