Durban, South Africa

(DER-bun) – “Looking out at night over this city of more than 4 million people, you can see quite a show of traffic lights, streetlights, porch lights, and security lights. In December, you might even catch a few homes or businesses sparkling with Christmas lights. It’s not common, but it brings joy to this holiday-homesick missionary. But would you believe that the biggest Christmas light display we’ve seen in Durban, South Africa, is on and around an Islamic Sufi mosque, one that’s covered in strings of bright bulbs and swags of twinkling lights that instantly make you think of Christmas? And at the time of year when we celebrate the birth of our Savior, whom Muslims refuse to acknowledge as Lord? I can’t imagine their thought process in deciding to partake in this tradition. It reminds me that even in the darkest places, God’s light will always shine brighter and His truth will prevail. Please pray for the salvation of the Muslims in our city who are far from Christ, lost in spiritual darkness.” “Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life'” (John 8:12 ESV).
