It’s their weekly holy day. After their husbands pick up their prayer rugs, roll them up, and tuck them under their arms for their walk home from the mosques, the women begin their own stroll over to the place where they gather. Each week, women come together to cook and share a meal. Though many moved to Europe when they were young to start a better life, they miss their home and community. Europe is not only chilly physically, but its culture is much colder than the warm lands they come from. They’re used to laughter, noise, food, hot drinks, and hours of conversation. Europeans separate after social gatherings to eat in their own homes. These North African women come from a culture where food and hospitality mean that you welcome others into your home without hesitation. John 6:35 (ESV) says, “Jesus said to them, ‘I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.'” Pray for these women as they drink tea and eat bread together to have opportunities to hear about Jesus. Pray that their hearts will be soft and open to hear His voice. May they find true joy in Him.
