Northern African and Middle Eastern Peoples

Mental health is not commonly talked about among the desert peoples of northern Africa; hence, it is also not well understood. Physical illness is treated either by traditional medicine or, where available, by trained medical professionals, but mental illness such as psychosis, paranoia, and depression are not commonly diagnosed even though there is treatment for them. Mental struggles of hopelessness and despair are not discussed. Suicide is increasing, especially among young men. Pray for an increased acknowledgement and understanding of mental illness and health. Ask for those who are suffering to be able to get help. Pray for young people to be willing to talk with their parents about their struggles and fears and for parents to be receptive to their children. Intercede for more treatment centers. Ask that those who are deep in mental struggles will find hope in Christ. “I came that they may have life and have it abundantly” (John 10:10 ESV).
