Pray for the Taiwanese people on April 4-5 and April 17, Tomb Sweeping Day and the beginning of Matsu pilgrimages which will continue into May. These events are steeped in tradition, culture, and ancestor/temple worship of the many gods revered in Taiwan. Both events seek to appease gods, spirits and ancestors. In addition, these events obligate worshippers to seek blessings for their ancestors. Families hold ancestor worship ceremonies in homes, shrines, temples, and cemeteries as they burn incense and spirit money plus offer sacrifices and meals to gods and spirits. Matsu pilgrimages can be hundreds of miles. Hundreds of thousands of people join the religious parades, which may last up to nine days. The parades pass near many churches. Pray for Christians and churches to seize opportunities to minister to pilgrims, sharing the good news of Christ. Pray pilgrims will sense the emptiness these activities cannot fill and that objects of worship will be found powerless and futile, causing pilgrims to turn from these entrenched spiritual traditions to Christ alone.
