(muh-NIL-uh) – “Halo-halo,” a favorite Philippine afternoon snack, literally means “mix-mix.” This refreshing dessert, which is a mixture of ice cream, sweet milk, corn, gelatin cubes, coconut and other fruits, represents the diversity of people you will find in the Metro Manila region. It is a city of extremes, from the wealthy descendants of Spanish aristocracy to the rising young middle class to the ever-present poor. Living side by side, the few rich are very rich and the millions of poor are very poor. Rich in history and culture, the capital city of Manila is also the political, economic, and social center of the Philippines. This city is one of 17 cities and municipalities that form metropolitan Manila, also known as the National Capital Region. Although it’s the smallest region in the country, Metro Manila has the highest population, with about 15.5 million people. Filipinos, known for their warm and friendly hospitality, are in need of hearing the truth of the gospel. Although 90 percent consider themselves “Christian,” most are blinded by religious ritualism mixed with animism and do not understand the necessity of having a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Please pray for the salvation of the peoples of Metro Manila.
