Six believers — three couples — sit squished into a booth at a hole-in-the-wall restaurant in a neighborhood in Pretoria. Lunch after house church provides an extended opportunity to fellowship for these white South Africans. The conversation constantly switches between English and their mother tongue, a language similar to Dutch called Afrikaans (pronounced ah-frih-KAHNS). Their words are ones of desperation. These white Pretorians feel the future for their children in South Africa is quite bleak. Opportunities are slim. Even with the best grades in school, their children may be overlooked for entrance into universities. Even with the best work ethic, Afrikaaner sons and daughters are passed over in job interviews simply because of the color of their skin. The parents talk through the implications of raising their children in this country. Should they emigrate to the United States? Where does God want them? Please pray for somber families like these who are seeking the Lord’s direction for their lives. “Lord, as you led the Israelites in the wilderness with a cloud by day and a fire by night, so lead these people. May Your word be a lamp to their feet and a light to their path (Psalm 119:105).”
