South Korea

South Korea observes January 1 as a new year holiday, but it is the Lunar New Year that is the traditional and bigger celebration. This family-focused celebration will be on February 17. Koreans typically travel to their hometowns, so three days are allotted for the observance. On this day Koreans greet each other with, “Many blessings be upon you in the new year,” and they eat “tteokguk” (sliced rice cakes in soup). The younger generations bow before their grandparents, parents and older relatives in a traditional Korean style known as “sebae” and are blessed with good wishes and words of wisdom. Children and the elderly receive gifts of money. Friends and family also play games like “yutnori,” a traditional Korean board game for all ages. For traditional families, they also prepare food for the ancestral rites on the first morning of the new year. Please pray that God will give wisdom and courage to Christians so they will share the gospel message with family and friends as they gather to celebrate the new year. Please pray that Korean believers will live vibrant Christian lives. People are seeking, pray for believers to share the eternal hope in Jesus.
