“I could feel the dirt turning to sweaty mud between my toes,” a missionary writes. “The hard wooden planks beneath me pinched. Stoic faces were shadowed dark from the bright sun streaming in the open window holes. My husband and I had spent years teaching God’s Word in these villages. The day had come when they told us unemotionally that they didn’t want the gospel. ‘We understand exactly what you’re teaching,’ the leader of the group said. ‘But if we accept what you’re teaching, then we must change our whole lives — and we don’t want to.’ There are many ‘would-be believers’ in southern Africa. But the difficulty of leaving behind the traditional ways is painfully underestimated. When Africans choose Jesus, they’re choosing to step out of their community. Please pray: ‘Jesus, please help new believers rid themselves of all deceit and envy. Let them crave pure spiritual milk so they may grow up in their salvation, now that they’ve tasted that the Lord is good, for they’re a chosen people and God’s special possession. As they live as spiritual foreigners in their own culture, let them live such good lives that their neighbors may see their good deeds and glorify God (1 Peter 2:1-3, 9-12)!”
