A missionary who is now retired from the International Mission Board writes from North Carolina: “Disaster from Hurricane Helene is all around us in surrounding towns, some wiped out. Rescue efforts are happening. People who live in the mountains have been cut off because of roads destroyed, landslides, and downed trees. Gasoline shortage has been a problem, and there was no phone service. We had flooding and winds here, and we have the section of I-40 that’s now impassable. There are businesses and homes in our town that were flooded/destroyed. Some will never reopen. My husband’s parents are just three miles away, but phone service was down, so we’ve been going back and forth to check on them. But things are looking up here in town. Our daughter lives 50 miles away. The bottom floor of her apartment was flooded. She got out with her dog and car. It took quite a while because of blockages, but she went to our son’s home about 20 minutes away. Like so many, we’re still just stunned at all the devastation. It was traumatic for folks who lost loved ones and all possessions. We’re so grateful for your prayers for all involved and for those who give so generously to Send Relief.”
