Betel Nut Teeth

The Kol people of the Pomio District, East New Britain, Papua New Guinea, in and around the village of Tuke. Portraits of the Kol people.

The red-stained teeth and lips is from the betel nut, or buai, which grows in these tropical climates and is chewed as a part of everyday life. Betel nut has a mild stimulant effect and in addition to reasons of tradition locals chew it for stress reduction, heightened awareness, and suppression of hunger.
