Mark Midgett Alexander Jr., an International Mission Board missionary emeritus who shared the gospel in Argentina, died Dec. 27, 2024. He was 97.
Mark was born Dec. 27, 1927, in South Norfolk, Virginia. He graduated from South Norfolk High School and received the Bachelor of Arts from Wake Forest College (now University) in North Carolina; and the Bachelor of Divinity from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas.
He came to saving faith in Christ as a young teenager and felt that God was calling him to preach. After high school, he entered college and then seminary to prepare for ministry. In 1952, Mark married Cecile Price.
While in seminary, he heard a professor talk of the need for more missionaries all over the world. While seeking missionary appointment he wrote, “That was a time of sincere searching for God’s will in my own life regarding the mission field. … It seemed like the greatest thing in the world was in doing God’s will, and right then and there I surrendered my life to be used as a missionary to whatever field in the world God would lead me.”
In 1956, the International Mission Board appointed Mark and Cecile missionaries to Argentina. They served for 34 years.
Mark was preceded in death by Cecile, his wife of 68 years.
He is survived by his son, Mark Steven (Karen); three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
A funeral service was held Jan. 2 at Jaynes Memorial Chapel in Duncanville, Texas, with burial at Little Bethel Memorial Park, Duncanville.
Donations in his memory may be made to the Lottie Moon Offering, IMB, 3806 Monument Avenue, Richmond, VA 23230, or online at Generosity Resource Center – IMB Generosity.
