Larry Johnson, an International Mission Board missionary emeritus who shared the gospel in Peru and Mexico, died April 28, 2025. He was 90.
Larry was born Oct. 9, 1934, in Veribest, Texas, to the late Jean S. and Wynama Johnson. He received the Associate of Arts from Angelo State University, San Angelo, Texas.
On April 18, 1953, he married his high school sweetheart, Joy Clark. He farmed, worked as a traveling feed salesman, and as a real estate broker throughout the rest of the 1950s. He then returned to farming full time. They were members of First Baptist Church in San Angelo.
While seeking missionary appointment he wrote, “I became personally interested in the mission field during my trip to Fortaleza, Brazil, in the winter of 1981. I have since sought the Lord’s will in my life in regard to the mission field and have been led to this point.”
In 1984, the International Mission Board appointed Larry and Joy missionaries to Peru. They served in agricultural evangelism, digging wells, building roads, developing schools and churches, supporting and aiding community orphanages, and creating high altitude tree planting. They later served in Mexico.
Larry was preceded in death by his son, David Johnson.
He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Joy; his children, Lucy Johnson of Cajamarca, Peru, and Lucky Clark Johnson of Mexico; two grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.
A graveside service was held May 1 at Mullins Cemetery in Miles, Texas.
