On New Year’s Day, the Noto Peninsula on Japan’s main island of Honshu was hit hard by an earthquake. Many prayed for families and friends who lost loved ones and for the considerable destruction that took place. The area is slowly rebuilding and recovering. This area is home to a number of traditional Japanese artisans. When a local potter returned to his workshop after the earthquake, he couldn’t bear to throw away the broken pieces of his shattered tea bowls. Not only were they his own work but the award-winning works of his potter father and grandfather. It took him a while to figure out what to do with the shattered pieces, but after some experimentation, he found that by adding the powdered pieces of the broken tea bowls to clay, it resulted in a beautiful collage-type appearance. Some of his pieces can now be seen in a major department store in Tokyo. The Lord is a master craftsman, and the Bible says that He is the Potter but people are just clay (Isaiah 45:9). Pray that as the churches and Christians of this area reach out, many will come to know the Potter and be molded into His likeness.
