Taiwan is known as one of the most religious places in the world. Idol worship is a daily occurrence. There are temples, both large and small, on every corner and in alleyways, as well as altars set up in homes and places of business. The Taiwanese live with an awareness of the spirit world. They live in fear of spirits who they believe can haunt and harm. During Ghost Month, it’s believed that spirits without a home roam the earth, seeking to have their needs met. Many people in southern Taiwan try to appease these ghosts by offering food and burning incense. Pray that these dear ones will be unbound from the superstition and fear that grips them. May they have the opportunity to hear and the desire to accept the peace and abundance of life that God intends for all of them. Pray that they will know the truth of Isaiah 41:10 and be able to claim this promise of God when faced with fear: “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand” (Isaiah 41:10 ESV).
