Eternal Peace Primary Care Clinic

When Meilani* shared the ultrasound photo with her husband Marwan*, he was amazed, and together, they agreed not to terminate Meilani’s pregnancy. This conversation was very different than earlier ones in which Marwan emphatically told his wife to terminate her pregnancy because of his recent job loss and other marital tension. Meilani, however, knew the midwife at Eternal Peace Primary Care Clinic and sought her advice. The ultrasound photo she saw opened the door to conversation with Marwan. Your generosity to this ministry allowed Meilani and Marwan to understand God’s plan for their baby.

The sonogram machine at our clinic shows women like Meilani their babies and helps them understand the life growing inside them. Most women in our region never see a picture of their babies before birth. “Is that a baby?” and “That’s really a picture of my baby?” are common responses when mothers see an ultrasound photo for the first time. Providing a photo is only the beginning of counseling women to understand that God has a purpose for every child and person He created.

Since her initial screening earlier this year, the clinic staff has followed up with Meilani regularly. We have been to her home, befriending her family and providing counseling. Thank you for being a part of Meilani and Marwan’s decision to give life to their child.

Your prayers and sacrificial giving provide low-cost medical care to Starfruit Village and the surrounding communities. Your gifts help the medical staff and chaplain team serve patients with the love of Christ, doing follow-up home visits with new believers and patients who want to know more about the gospel.

Gospel goals produce significant impact. New patients come into the Eternal Peace Clinic in Starfruit Village each week. Through your intercession and partnership, God has significantly increased the number of patients we see each month over the first half of the year. The goal God has given us is that 1,000 patients receive treatment at the clinic in 2023. From January to June, just over 500 patients sought treatment. Many of these new patients came after a generator explosion in April, which left twelve people with significant burns. The local government leader told residents to confirm their government insurance was active. The closest place for many to check was the Eternal Peace Clinic. Then, those same patients decided to make the Eternal Peace Clinic their primary care physician on their insurance. This connection means more people can experience the love of Jesus tangibly.

Nurse follows God’s call. Nurse Farah* drives 50 minutes on a motorbike one way to work at the Eternal Peace Primary Care Clinic. When she started working at the clinic four years ago, she wondered whether she should find someplace closer to her home to work. Soon, Farah began growing as a disciple of Christ and built close relationships with her co-workers; the team at the clinic now feels like her family. She enjoys her job and views it as a calling from the Lord. She has helped hundreds of patients feel safe. Working at the clinic allows Farah to express God’s love in a concrete way. On home visits, she willingly enters dirt-floor homes. God’s love shines through her to the community. Now, she has every pothole memorized on her daily commute.

Thank you for your faithful intercession and sacrificial giving on behalf of our team and the Southeast Asians God calls us to reach. With your support, we are addressing poor health-education practices and substandard access to healthcare in Starfruit Village and other low-income communities in this region.

Tragedy Presents Opportunities. In the Starfruit Village, near the Eternal Peace Clinic, a night intended for celebration at the end of the fasting month for the majority religion turned to tragedy with a spark, an explosion followed by a flash fire. Several men were operating a home-rigged portable sound system in the back of a pickup truck when someone smoking a cigarette tried to refuel the generator.

Fire spread quickly from the explosion and burned twelve young men. The residents quickly loaded the victims into personal vehicles, taking them to four emergency rooms across the city. With the holiday traffic, the drive was forty-five minutes to an hour for basic triage.

The ER bandages covered the external wounds while pain and remorse remained in their hearts. The director of the Eternal Peace Clinic heard this news and quickly readied the clinic team to serve and care for the victims once the hospitals discharged them. Nine of the men returned to their village homes, while one of the patients was sent to the provincial capital for more substantial care.

One day the family of one of the victims rushed into the Eternal Peace Clinic in a panic. Their brother died from his burns, and his mother fainted when she found out and was unresponsive. The family was fearful this day would see two members die. Dr. Rick* and his team went to their house, found the mother’s pulse and breathing but could not bring her back to consciousness. The family quickly took the mother to the city for further care in the hospital. The family was extremely grateful because the clinic did not charge for the consultation. That ministry came from your generosity!

About a week later, another burn victim passed away. A third victim has been hospitalized for over a month.

The men’s deaths and burns remind us of the spiritual reality that these victims are eternally separated from God. They had not put their faith in Christ as Savior.

Our teammates are neighbors with these young men and their families, and we are reaching out to them in Christ’s name. The night watchmen helped fundraise for the victim’s medical bills. The prayer team visits some of the victims discharged from the hospital in their homes as they recover. Our team also offers counseling as the young men struggle with memories of this traumatic experience. In addition, the head of the clinic, Dr. Rick*, offered free health care vouchers at the Eternal Peace Clinic to all the burn victims, including wound care.

“Yes,” Mrs. Sumney replied,

A week later, a teammate went to Mrs. Sumney’s house. When a person shows interest in the Savior, we want to respond as soon as possible. Mrs. Sumney could now move around with the help of a walker. Her speech was still slurred but able to be understood. The Christian worker explained the hope of forgiveness of sins through Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection. She also shared that just as Jesus Christ gave healing to Mrs. Sumney’s body, He also provides healing for her soul.

After hearing the story, she wanted to believe, as did her neighbor, who had seen the physical changes in Mrs. Sumney’s body. The two ladies and Mrs. Sumney’s husband have joined in a Bible study to learn more about growing as a follower of Christ.

One patient, Mr. Larry*, visited us when the clinic initially opened in 2020. He invited his neighbors and family over when the clinic team paid a house call. With a smile and sincere heart, Mr. Larry told his circle of influence, “This clinic has medicine that helps you get well. If you have any problems, you should go to the clinic.” The clinic director shared with Mr. Larry and his guests that healing comes from Jesus Christ. We are blessed to serve alongside a clinic staff that serves the community with the love of Jesus.

Prayer request. Pray for Mr. Larry to trust in Jesus and spread the good news of Christ’s forgiveness of sins in the same way he tells others about the good care he receives at the clinic.

Because of your partnership, 30 Baptist Nursing College students began learning how to share the love of Jesus while serving at the Eternal Peace Clinic. Each Saturday, a group went to the markets and homes near the clinic to offer free vitamins, blood sugar checks and blood pressure monitoring. Mentors helped the students give a verbal witness and pray for each patient.

Obstacles Overcome
The staff continues to diligently serve, even when there was a spike in Omicron cases this spring. The project manager and his family became sick with COVID, as well as one of the clinic dentists and her family. The clinic staff sent medicine and food to both families while they were in quarantine.

Clinicians Growing in Christ
Each staff member is growing closer to the Lord, and they gather weekly to worship. On one occasion, the staff reflected on what they achieved over the past twelve months and suggested improvements. The head doctor shared, “I learn things at this clinic not taught anywhere else. I was offered another job, but I turned it down because I would only have been pursuing worldly riches if I took it. I grow in my faith by working at this clinic. The Friday services help my faith.”

“Persistent in Prayer” is the clinic motto and is etched on the back of clinic uniform jackets. For the clinic’s second anniversary, the team took a day trip to a Christian retreat center to plan.

• Pray we receive approval from government health insurance. Joining them will be a magnet to attract more patients.
• Pray for the new believers who are being ministered to by the prayer team at the clinic. May they grow in maturity.

Our area is becoming an epicenter of COVID-19 cases, and amid that crisis, the Eternal Peace Primary Care Clinic continues to be a blessing to the community. Over the summer months, thanks to your prayerful and financial support, the clinic tangibly demonstrated the love of Jesus to many. Daisy*, one of the nurses at the clinic, just celebrated two years of faithful service. The Father has done a great work in her heart. She has always had a hunger for God’s Word but did not attend a church regularly.

A local Baptist minister teaches the Word weekly in a clinic chapel time, and through His teaching, Daisy* became convicted about baptism. She had never been immersed. After further study of God’s Word together, Daisy followed Jesus in baptism. She continues to draw strength from the Lord through prayer through the turbulent and uncertain times of the pandemic. Please pray for her and her work at the clinic as a witness to the many non-Christian patients.
The clinic established a new local partnership with the Baptist Nursing College in May. The professors gave a health education lesson on women’s health to teenage girls and their mothers at a home near the clinic. Both believers and non-believers attended the class, and the reception was positive from all involved. The nursing school hopes to partner regularly with the Eternal Peace Clinic. We look forward to promoting health and the gospel together, so we can stir on each other to good works.

The clinic staff also is working in partnership with the local community health clinic to vaccinate residents. The government vaccination program involves setting up at the village hall and inviting all those who qualify to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. The nurses wore advertisement for the clinic on their uniforms. The nurses have been a blessing to the community health office by supporting these vaccination drives. In one five-hour shift, the team helped vaccinate 520 people village residents. These clinics are once or twice a week for the immediate future.

Because you give, we are able to send out nurses to the nearby villages to be a voice for the clinic and introduce our team. We ask that you pray with us that the people in these unreached villages will receive the gospel shared by our prayer/home visitation team. With many people asking for home visits, it takes time to get them. As of July 2021, the government has implemented movement restrictions to reduce the spread of COVID-19. This also limits our visitation schedule.

Please pray for the staff to continue to be healthy so they can serve effectively.
Pray for the Father to provide all the needs of the clinic according to His glorious riches in Christ Jesus.
Pray for boldness among the health staff and prayer team at the clinic. May they speak truth to the patients and other clinic visitors with love and clarity.

“I am so thankful for the opportunity to serve the Lord through this clinic,” said Mr. Sebastian, a retired man who serves twice a week on the home visitation team. Since July 2020, Mr. Sebastian has helped lead several men to faith in a neighborhood near the Eternal Peace Clinic. The men were baptized at his church in December. The group meets weekly, and each gathering has a new attendee, a new brother in Christ. By God’s power, the new believers are boldly sharing with their families and neighbors about salvation in Jesus Christ.

Mr. Sebastian also joins our team in another God-given opportunity, our partnership with Send Relief to offer food-relief bags. The lingering economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic are felt all around this farming village. Our team at the Eternal Peace Clinic hands out a weeks’ supply of groceries to residents who have the greatest need. While the employees of the Eternal Peace Clinic hand out food bags, Mr. Sebastian explains who said, “I am the bread of life,” and prays for the families during the home visit.

A woman and her daughter, who recently had face surgery, receive food from gifts given by Southern Baptists that enable our team to offer food distribution, offsetting the continued challenges from COVD-19.

Since January 2021, the Eternal Peace Clinic has been able to make progress towards sustainability. Your giving helps undergird the ongoing evangelism, discipleship and leadership training at the clinic. In February 2021, the clinic averaged visits of six patients per day, with services of a primary care, dentist, midwife and minor emergency care. The clinic staff continues to do medical home visits as well, for those who have no transportation or are too weak to come into the clinic. Showing extra love and care in this area is noticed by the community members, as no other clinic does such care.

Pray for us as we continue to develop the women’s health services at the clinic. Pray for the addition of new home-visitation team members. We have more residents near the clinic who want to hear about the good news and study the Bible than current staff can meet with consistently.
