The Sereer Team is located on the western edge of Senegal near the coast in an area called in the French trade language, “le petite cote,” or the little coast. The Sereer of Senegal is a predominantly Muslim people group, numbering over two million and includes many groups that speak different languages or dialects of Sereer. Most Sereer live within two hours of the coast, but the large population and vast geographic area in which they live is a barrier to reaching them with the gospel.
Another barrier is the need for well-grounded biblical leaders, leadership development, pastoral training, and discipleship among the Sereer. Our team is addressing these issues by leading pastor trainings and discipleship meetings as well as offering Bibles to Sereer believers so they can read God’s Word for themselves. In addition, our gospel outreach ministry includes Jesus Film showings and streaming the audio Bible and Jesus Film over Wi-Fi to Sereer cell phones. We invite you to partner with us through prayer and giving so these vital ministries can reach the Sereer with the gospel!
During a recent pastoral training, a local pastor shared how he is meeting with a small group of believers that he hopes will become a church. The trainings help give a solid biblical foundation for those leading and teaching others. A solid foundation is always critical for believers, but especially in this context when they are witnessing to Muslims who practice a unique ‘brand’ of Islam.
Although most Sereer consider themselves Muslim, there is also a strong influence of traditional religious practices and ancestor worship that is an additional barrier to reaching them. Typically, there is pressure from family and culture to continue these practices. There are limited Scripture resources in the Sereer languages to help them know how to follow Christ apart from their religious heritage. Your partnership is crucial to the Sereer hearing and fully embracing the gospel and learning to live out the teachings of Jesus.
Gifts toward specific efforts show us what you are excited about. Occasionally, we may redeploy gifts as we follow God's leading with urgent opportunities or changing international contexts. Any gifts received beyond the goal go toward a similar project or our team support.
Digital Engagement
Senegal is rapidly moving into the digital age. 60% of the population is under the age of 25. As in America, the youth of Senegal are spending large amounts of time on their cell phones engaged with digital media. We have a huge opportunity to reach the lost all over Senegal with a plan that includes training our personnel in developing and implementing a digital media strategy to share the Gospel in the various languages of Senegal.
Jesus Film Outreach
Your gift will help our team purchase a projector and speakers so that we can show the Jesus Film in Sereer Villages. Each showing will be accompanied by a gospel presentation and follow up with those who want to know more about Christ.
Bibles for the Sereer
God's word is available in both Sereer and French languages, but the Sereer people don't have ready access to Scripture. Your gift will make it possible for us to provide Bibles to Sereer believers. A gift of only $8 provides one Bible.
Lightstream Device for Evangelism
The Lightstream device allows us to stream audio Bible stories, the Jesus Film, and electronic Bibles over WiFi to mobile phones. Your gift will help us purchase one device to use among the Sereer as we go from village to village.
Pastor Training
Pastors in our part of the world have a tough job! They need training, encouragement, and fellowship with other pastors who can share burdens, ideas, and resources. Your gifts will allow us to provide opportunities for training conferences and seminars for these beloved servants of God.
Expanding the Gospel's Reach
As we share the gospel, disciple new believers, nurture churches, and develop leaders, we travel a lot. We want to ensure everyone has access to the good news and the training they need to play their part in building God’s kingdom. Your gift helps fund fuel and public transportation costs for our team’s ministry so that as many people as possible can hear the gospel and learn what it means to follow Jesus faithfully.
Gospel Fluency
Sharing the gospel clearly, correctly, and fluently as we evangelize, disciple, and teach is our team’s top priority. Learning language and culture takes time, effort, and grace from the Lord. The Lottie Moon Christmas Offering provides our basic language training, but your gift will provide our team with more language classes, tutoring, and language-learning materials as we seek to be faithful and grow in gospel fluency.
The Bible on Micro SD Cards
Many of the Sereer cannot read the Bible. Help us purchase and distribute micro-SD cards that can be loaded on phones so that the Sereer can have access to Scripture, Bible story sets, and the Jesus Film for evangelism and discipleship. With the Bible on their phones, they can take it with them wherever they go!
Fatou* became a believer because Christians like you sent a team to her village with the “JESUS” film. This precious elderly woman was one of three women in her village who accepted Jesus.
In her culture, anyone who shares a surname is greeted with, “You are my father’s child.” What a joy to share with Fatou that God sees her as His child because of her faith in Christ.
“For he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one source. That is why he is not ashamed to call them brothers say, ‘I will tell of your name to my brothers; in the midst of the congregatino, I will sing your praise’” (Hebrews 2:11-12).
Fatou’s excitement about her faith is contagious. Each time we meet with her for discipleship, she is engaged and ready to learn.

Samba* and his family watched the “JESUS” film with many others from his village. Samba tried to understand it, but, at only 10 years old, he did not know much of the language it used, but his parents seemed transfixed with the story. Suddenly, the projector froze, and the film picture faded. The people who brought the movie to his village apologized and promised to return. Little Samba moseyed back to his hut with his siblings, disappointed and doubtful the visitors would return. To his surprise, they did come back, and this time, the “JESUS” film was in his language, and Samba understood it all!
Because of your generosity, Samba and dozens of others in his village saw the “JESUS” film in the Sereer language, their heart language. Your gifts provided the portable battery and projector our team now uses to share the gospel in rural areas among the Sereer people, where we work alongside the local church to present a Christian witness, including regular prayer, discipleship, and worship.

Picture a group of people in Senegal surrounding a radio, hearing God’s Word, some for the first time. Because of your generosity, hundreds are listening to the gospel on their devices and radios.
Your gift purchased a new SD card writer, a device that enables us to load gospel content onto SD cards that people then insert into their mobile devices and radios to hear the good news.
Using these small portable devices, we load the JESUS film, various Scripture portions, songs, and chronological Bible story sets for use in multiple ministry settings. Depending on the setting and primary language, we have loaded the cards with God’s Word in Sereer, Wolof, and Pulaar.
It’s a great way to deliver gospel content in places without electricity or internet connection, which is common in rural areas of Senegal. The SD cards are also great tools for those who learn better by listening rather than reading or for those who don’t read at all.
Recently, we distributed hundreds of cards in neighborhoods, towns, and villages of Senegal. In one location, a local Baptist church has a group of members regularly evangelizing near the church grounds. Several churches now using these SD cards to give to people interested in hearing more of God’s Word.

The Sereer of Senegal is a predominantly Muslim people group, numbering over two million, including many groups that speak different languages or dialects of Sereer. Your faithful intercession and generosity undergird evangelism efforts among this group, as well as pastor trainings, discipleship meetings, and Bibles for Sereer believers so they can read God’s Word directly.
Local church shares the gospel with neighbors. A local Baptist church here recently hosted an evangelism summit. In addition to training members on effective evangelism strategies, we joined the members in walking through the neighborhood, meeting folks, praying with them, and sharing the gospel. Because of your generosity, the church offered French Bibles, Wolof New Testaments, the Gospels of Luke and John, and evangelistic tracts to those open to receiving them. While we do not know the full impact of these efforts, several new neighbors have begun attending the church. Pray the gospel seeds sown in the neighborhood to find prepared soil of hearts open to hearing God’s offer of salvation and eternal life; also, pray for continued boldness in witnessing.
“JESUS” film outreach progresses. Recently, we began the process of purchasing the projector, speaker, and battery for the “JESUS” film outreach. They should arrive soon. Thank you, precious partners in the gospel, for your faithful commitment to supporting our team in reaching the Sereer people for Christ. Pray for opportunities to show the “JESUS” film to Sereer people and for those who view the film to feel the Holy Spirit’s conviction to respond.
