The traditional Mongolian saying, “A Mongol without a horse is like a bird without wings,” indicates how highly the horse is esteemed among Mongolians. The heartland of the Mongol peoples of East Asia covers a large area of Mongolia, China and Russia. At its center lies a vast area of grassland plains known as steppes. These are typified by their temperate, semi-arid climate that is too dry for forests to develop, and too wet to become desert. Almost one-third of the region’s 340,000 square miles of steppe land is located in Mongolia and has been the traditional home to families of nomadic herders.

Two children stand outside their family’s tent, known as a ‘get,’ in Mongolia. Despite significant improvements in Mongolia’s education system in recent years, it can still be very difficult for children of rural families to receive a full 10-year primary and secondary education. A combination of overcrowding, aging facilities and great distances from the temporary homes of nomadic families means that only 45% of rural students complete high school, compared with 55% nationally.
