(AH-far) – Afar society is divided along gender lines, but the division is not as intense as it is in other places in the world. Afar men and women have equal political rights, are generally courteous with one another, interact in offices and markets, and send both their boys and girls to school. However, there are clear divisions between “male spaces” and “female spaces.” In town, boys and men are more likely to be seen out and about, while girls and women stay busy in their homes and neighborhoods. Some examples of a man’s occupation are butcher, tailor, electrician, policeman, fisherman, teacher, spiritual leader, shopkeeper, and doctor. Most women work in the home, where multiple generations share the housework. Women who work outside the home typically make and sell food such as tea, coffee, fried snacks, bread, pasta, and curries. Some women also work as shepherds, teachers, or nurses. Ask God to call Afar men and Afar women to Himself. Pray for believers to have meaningful friendships with Afar people in many different neighborhoods and jobs so that many may hear the gospel. Pray that whole households of Afar people will believe the gospel and become part of God’s family (Acts 16:30-34).
