The Afar live in a region of Africa that is home to some of the world’s hottest recorded temperatures. They’re a tribe of resilient pastoralists who care for their herds of camels, cattle, goats, and sheep, and they often move from place to place in search of food and water. The Afar have a reputation for being fierce warriors who’ve fought many neighboring ethnic groups over the years. Recently, many of these historically transient pastoralists and warriors have begun settling down in or near urban areas. This is a result of outside development efforts and an increasingly harsh environment, both of which caused available grazing land to dwindle. In urban areas, the Afar are often an ethnic minority and are treated poorly by the majority population. Pray for peace between Afar people and neighboring tribes, and ask that the life-changing power of the gospel will enable them to live in harmony, for “great peace have those who love your law” (Psalm 119:165 ESV).
