Amazigh of Libya

(am-uh-ZEEGH) – The Amazigh of Libya encompass approximately 328,000 people among several different tribes under the larger umbrella of Amazigh (also called Berber) peoples. Some of these tribes speak different dialects of Arabic while others primarily speak different dialects within the Amazigh language family. They can be found throughout the coastal area but live mainly in the mountains of Libya, 30 or more miles from the coast, and in a few oases in the central and eastern parts of the country. Though the distances between some of these tribes are extensive, the tribes do share several bonds. One is their status as minority peoples who have been persecuted throughout the country’s history. Another shared history is that before Islam arrived, the Amazigh followed Christianity. They also pride themselves in, and are known for, their hospitality. The bond of which they are most proud, however, is that of their shared identity as Amazigh. Pray for the salvation of the Amazigh of Libya.
