Dar es Salaam, Tanzania

(dar es sah-LAHM) –

“To grant to those who mourn in Zion — to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit . . .” (Isaiah 61:3 ESV). Missionary Karen Lee writes: “I remember a song entitled ‘Beauty for Ashes’ recorded by Crystal Lewis. This song, along with Isaiah 61:3, was the basis of choosing the name of our ministry: Beauty for Ashes. Almost 13 years ago, we handed out our first piece of cake and cup of juice to some of the most vulnerable women in Dar es Salaam. To date, we cannot count the pieces of cake and juice that have given out over the years. However, we do know that lives have been changed! In the words of one of our earliest new believers, ‘Cake did not save me, but God used cake to save my life!’ Our Dar Urban Team is rejoicing that God still gives beauty for ashes and strength for fear. Please join us in praying for the four women who recently exchanged their mourning and ashes for joy and beauty!”
