Asaf and Tamar had been attending a local congregation for a few months. They both were new believers, delivered from a dark life and seeking to follow the Lord. They both wanted to follow Him in baptism, and, though not extremely uncommon, this certainly pointed to their inward change and desire to be faithful. The day arrived, and everyone gathered by the water. Before entering, they both shared their testimony. To the surprise of those present, immediately following their testimony, Asaf got down on one knee and proposed, to which Tamar answered, “Yes!” What a picture of the gospel — the Lord has taken for Himself a less-than-faithful bride and made us one in His body, which is the true heart of baptism. Please pray for Asaf and Tamar’s continued growth in the Lord, and ask that their dramatic, transformative testimony of God’s redemption will bring many to Christ. “That he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish” (Ephesians 5:26-27 ESV).
