Each full moon, Buddhist residents of Sri Lanka celebrate Poya Day. Each Poya Day throughout the year signifies a different aspect of Buddha’s life, but in May, millions of Sri Lankans will celebrate Vesak Poya Day, a day that commemorates Buddha’s birth, death, and enlightenment. Often devotees set up free food stalls, offering rice, ice cream, drinks, etc. to all passersby. Vesak lanterns are another major part of the celebration. Crafted from bamboo and colored tissue paper, these lanterns are said to represent the light of wisdom amid darkness. Please pray for many Sri Lankan Buddhists to hear the gospel. Pray for many eyes and hearts to be opened to see that Jesus is the one true King and that apart from Him, all dwell in darkness. Pray that they will hear and believe Jesus’ words in John 8:12 (ESV): “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
